Hubert Sumlin

An early shot from an unknown source shows Hubert playing the blues almost certainly with the mighty Howlin'Wolf. Hubert was much younger than his peers and was invited to play in Wolf's band at an early age. Raised on the plantations of Mississippi and Arkansas, he was given his first guitar by his mother. Her sacrifices certainly were worth her trouble. After Howlin Wolf died, Hubert was told he was finished in Chicago. Fearful for his future he moved to Austin ,Texas to stay with Stevie Ray Vaughan and brother Jimmy Vaughan. Hubert considered the brothers to be family. In an interview with him in Leeds, he told me about his terrible sense of loss when Stevie was killed in the helicopter crash. Ironically the  crash occurred only a few miles from Hubert's home in Wisconsin.  Hubert is cousin to Blues Brothers star Matt Guitar Murphy .
